On World Earth Day, it’s a momentous time to reflect on our planet’s health and our role in preserving it. At Phos Lighting, we’re not just another architectural lighting company – we’re pioneers in sustainability, and we’re proud to be one of only two B Corp certified companies in our industry. With over 140 years of British manufacturing heritage spanning five generations, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword for us – it’s the foundation of everything we do.
Embracing Sustainability and Circular Economy Since 1883
From our inception in 1883, when we began manufacturing parts for the British car industry, refurbishing and repairing has been at the core of our ethos. We’ve carried this commitment through to the modern day, ensuring we’re part of a circular economy that prioritises repairing and reusing products over simply replacing them. Our dedication to longevity extends to every aspect of our business.
As an off-grid company powered by solar panels, we utilise the sun’s energy to create our lights. This not only reduces our carbon footprint but also ensures a clean, renewable source of energy. Being a British manufacturer has its advantages – we’re supported by a local community of suppliers, allowing us to reduce delivery times, maintain control over our manufacturing process, and easily repair or adapt fittings after installation.

Ninety-five percent of our products and components are made right here in the UK, with 45% of our raw materials sourced locally as well. Our aluminium supply, for instance, integrates sustainability by utilising 55% recycled aluminium, minimising our dependence on virgin resources. Even our glass production is environmentally conscious, using readily available domestic materials and recycled glass.
But our commitment to sustainability doesn’t end with our products – it extends to our packaging and operations as well. We use only recyclable and environmentally friendly packaging, primarily cardboard, which is then recycled into protective packaging for outgoing goods. Our water supplier invests in carbon-offsetting schemes and water infrastructures in underdeveloped countries, aligning with our mission to prioritise the environment.

At Phos, we’re not just focused on creating products – we’re driving towards a circular economy. Our products score highly on circularity assessments, ensuring they have minimal environmental impact throughout their life cycle. We prioritise repair over replacement, with the majority of returns being repaired and recycled rather than discarded.
We’re proud to partner with organisations like Reewild and the Green Light Alliance, working together to combat climate change and promote sustainable practices in the lighting industry. Through initiatives like our book, “The Light Within Us,” we aim to educate and inspire others to embrace sustainable, planet-centric design
